Tom Engelhardt — Disaster on Autopilot: Overwrought Empire — The Discrediting of U.S. Military Power

Think of it as the American imperial paradox: everywhere there are now “threats” against our well-being which seem to demand action and yet nowhere are there commensurate enemies to go with them. Everywhere the U.S. military still reigns supreme by almost any measure you might care to apply; and yet -- in case the paradox has escaped you -- nowhere can it achieve its goals, however modest.

The singular success has been in creating a police state domestically through the unitary executive doctrine, suspension of constitutional rights, institution of a coordinated domestic secret police, total surveillance, and militarization of the domestic security force.

The cognitive dissonance between the dire global outlook and the ostrich-like US election campaign devoted entirely to stupid debates about budgetary bean-counting is becoming almost too much for me to handle.

This is horrible to watch...

I'm trying to get a diversion watching baseball and last nights Yankee/Oriole game on TBS seemed like every 2 innings there was a campaign commercial accusing and chastising a candidate of advocating some sort of "deficit increasing" policy...

can't escape it... hang in there Dan ... rsp,

Only four weeks to go right?

The depressing thing is seeing so many people I know losing their marbles for weeks on end as they absorb and repeat the mind-numbing talking points of the campaigns.
